Council and Executive - Members elect Councillors every two years to manage the union's assets and resources and to make policies and decisions in the best interests of the membership as a whole. Every member within an electorate is eligible to stand for office as a Councillor and to vote in elections. Council meets on a monthly basis. Each new Council elects an Executive at its first meeting. Executive is a sub-group of Councillors which meets frequently to prepare recommendations for Council and to make urgent or straightforward decisions on its behalf. Executive must, however, report all such decisions to Council for ratification. All members are entitled to both stand and vote for the full-time positions of CPSU(SPSF) Branch Secretary and Branch Assistant Secretary. These two people are responsible for the union's administration and are elected for a four-year term. They are also full members of Council and Executive, and hold the positions of PSA General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary, respectively. Currently, the Branch Secretary of the union is Jan McMahon; the Branch Assistant Secretary is Nev Kitchin; the President is Lindsay Oxlad; the Vice Presidents are Andrew Beck, Stephen Callaghan, Lesley Hughes, Peter Hewish, and Di Rankine; and the Treasurer is Chris Hall. Worksite Representatives - Each worksite is entitled to elect a Worksite Representative. These people are the cornerstone of the union. They represent the day-to-day interests of members. They are skilled and informed delegates who perform delegational and advisory roles to the members on the shop floor. Worksite Reps act as conduits for the union and its members. Through the Worksite Rep structure the union is able to communicate its policies and objectives directly to the membership and at the same time tap the views of the members as a group. Reps are given the opportunity to attend PSA/CPSU training courses. Reps are encouraged to become involved in Council-authorised committees in order to help develop policies. Reps are also encouraged to stand for election as Occupational Health & Safety Reps, in order to give them additional powers under the Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare Act. In addition, the union conducts a conference every two years (Biennial Conference) at which all Worksite Reps, Councillors and industrial committee members can attend to review or advise on all of the union's policies. |
