EQUAL TREATMENT FOR PUBLIC SERVANTS

On 31 August 2011 the Public Service Association (PSA) wrote to the Commissioner of Police seeking a fair time management system for public servants working at the new Police HQ.

An electronic scan system has been installed to accurately record start and finish times for public servants (unsworn staff). Sworn staff's attendance will not be monitored in the same way. This practice is not equitable. If a manual system is appropriate, it should be appropriate for all staff. Alternatively, if an electronic system is appropriate, it should be appropriate for all.

Unsworn staff must apply for a locker and meet set criteria to get a locker. The PSA believes that unsworn staff should have the same access to lockers as sworn staff.

In addition Call Centre staff have raised concerns about the safety of shift workers getting to and from the new Police HQ.

The new location is more “out of the way”, much further away from public transport and car parking.  These are legitimate concerns as getting safely to/and from work at night for the predominantly female staff is a real issue.

PSA still has not received a response to our letter. This lack of response to the PSA letter could be interpreted as further disregard for public servants.
