CLOSURE OF HIGH DEPENDENCY UNIT
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) has an autonomous, ten-bed high dependency unit (HDU). As part of the SA Health Care Plan and 2007-2008 budget strategy, the HDU will close and the patients will be transferred to the existing Surgical Ward. Currently HDU is in an area of poor amenity, varied limited natural light, and presents a risk in terms of evacuation in the event of an emergency (e.g. fire). The relocation of HDU and its subsequent integration with Ward South 2 will take place in two stages. Firstly, it is planned to relocate the beds to South 2. The beds will be monitored and the environment will support the requirements of HDU patients. An assessment will be undertaken to evaluate both the clinical effectiveness and management structure of the Unit. In order to consult with staff and unions affected by this change and to develop appropriate human resources principles and procedures where necessary, an HDU relocation consultative group has been established. The next meeting of the group is scheduled for Wednesday 10 October 2007. As a key stakeholder the PSA will be consulted throughout the process. For
