EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS
PSA is investigating reports that members at Flinders Medical Centre may have been accidentally exposed to friable asbestos during the removal of a drain. The incident occurred a number of weeks ago. On discovering that asbestos was disturbed, an asbestos cleanup process was initiated as per the regulations requirements. However prior to this cleanup any number of people may have been exposed. PSA has written to the Chief Executive Officer of Department of Health requesting particulars relating to this matter together with a request to SafeworkSA, seeking information on any investigation that may have taken place. Members
who believe they may have been exposed should contact SA Unions and
complete the asbestos exposure register. This is a confidential
document that may be used in any future compensation claims. Further information on electing a HSR is available from Nev Kitchin, Acting General Secretary, PSA email nev@cpsu.asn.au or phone direct on 8205 3222. In
particular PSA would like to acknowledge the work of existing Health
and Safety representatives and the importance of their role in your
work place. Members should always be vigilant in relation to asbestos
and any work being carried out in your workplace that may involve
asbestos. As in the above example mistakes occur. There are serious
consequences for failing to identify and carry out asbestos removal
in compliance with strict legislation and these events can cause
significant emotional and psychological distress. 19 May 2010 |
