PSA SECURES SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT Today, 15th February 2007, the PSA secured a commitment from the Department for Correctional Services to conduct an immediate comprehensive search of Port Augusta Prison. On 26 January 2007, a search of the laundry block at Port Augusta Prison resulted in the discovery of numerous prohibited items, including potential weapons. Despite the discovery, local management failed to follow accepted protocol and lock down the Prison to enable a thorough search of the Institution and surrounding areas to ensure no further items were in the prison. Once the PSA became aware of this incident, action was immediately taken to secure the welfare of its members. Despite discussions and correspondence between DCS and PSA yesterday, the Agency did not commit to a full lock down to enable a comprehensive search of the Pt Augusta Institution. Consequently, industrial action was taken which included the full lock down of all Government owned Institutions across the State this morning. Subsequently, DCS has agreed to a search of the Port Augusta Prison. At today's meeting of worksite representatives, all industrial action was lifted resulting from the following agreement between the parties:
All employees are entitled to a safe working environment. The PSA is committed to ensuring that this fundamental working condition is adhered to.
