MAGILL CENTRE REPLACEMENT UPDATE

Recently, members at Cavan and Magill Secure Care Centres held meetings to discuss the proposed replacement of the Magill Secure Care Centre. The majority of members indicated that two separate sites were the preferred option (unanimously at Magill), while all staff agreed that a single Centre was the least favourable alternative.

Sue Vardon had become aware of these discussions and wrote to the PSA on behalf of the Department.

In her letter she stated the following,

"I take this opportunity to provide clarity in relation to the matter of the proposed replacement Centre. The decision for one centre to be built was taken by Cabinet and was based on the proposal as endorsed by Treasury. While the Department provided input into the initial proposal, this has been a government decision. Therefore, whether one or two sites are built is not a point of further discussion."

The PSA will be meeting with your Representatives to discuss the implications of this letter. Please raise your concerns regarding these developments with your local PSA Representative to ensure all issues are considered and addressed.
