CAVAN MEMBERS DEMAND A SAFE WORKPLACE!

Public Service Association(PSA) members attended a meeting on the 19th December 2008 to discuss the serious incident that occurred on the 17th December 2008 and to determine that improvements must be made to ensure members are safe in the workplace.

During the meeting some members advised the group that not all recommendations from the Security Audit, which was a previous demand of members undertaken earlier in 2008, were completed. Local management reported that these issues had been raised with the "financial brokers" of the Department for Families and Communities and have not progressed. This is unacceptable to members!

Members unanimously passed a resolution with following demands:

  • That all windows are barred/secured, by 30th January 2009.

  • The "float" be made permanent/on-going addition to the staffing complement, immediately.

  • Modifications be made to stoves, to ensure that they can not be used as weapons against members, immediately.

  • Personal Protective Equipment and training in the use of be provided, immediately.

  • The use of Capsicum spray in Cavan Youth Training Centre be authorised.

Members will meet again at 3pm Tuesday 23rd December 2008 to discuss the response from management. Member are committed to ensuring their safety in the workplace and will not hesitate to implement appropriate action.
