Classification of Orthotists and Prosthetists response from Department of Health

In August 2008 the PSA provided Department of Health (DH) with a detailed submission on behalf of its members working as Orthotists and Prosthetists. This submission outlined a case for Orthotists and Prosthetists to be reclassified as Professional Officers (PO) due to the education requirement now being a discipline based degree level qualification. The submission also addressed a number of key elements raised by DH as a result of prior correspondence and discussions regarding this matter.

The PSA has received a letter in response from DH.
DH considers that some Orthotist and Prosthetist positions in SA Health incorporate components of what is traditionally considered professional duties and responsibilities. These positions include the requirement to prepare reports and manuscripts for peer reviewed publications and experienced practitioners that regularly present at national and international conferences.

DH have advised that some preliminary consultation has been conducted with Public Sector Workforce Relations in regard to whether both the TGO and PO streams would be appropriate for this occupation.

DH also advised they will be contacting the PSA to progress this option. The PSA will keep its members informed of any developments.

Please address any questions or comments to PSA Industrial Officer, Ted Szarek on phone 8205 3213 or email tcs@cpsu.asn.au
