COUNCIL ADJOURNS PUBLIC SECTOR BILL UPDATE

The Legislative Council adjourned at dinner time last night until 7 April 2009, with only one speaker dealing with the Public Sector Bill.

Prior to the adjournment Family First MLC the Hon Robert Brokenshire spoke in support of the role of the Public Sector and put on record that Family First opposes Chief Executives having the power to sack employees. He will continue his speech when Parliament next sits on 7 April.

The Family First MLC's speech included the following statements:

It is unhealthy to allow CEOs to be the hirers and firers of Public Servants.”

At the moment, without fear or favour, you can have a good career in Public Service... This Bill is going to wreck all that.”

Mr Brokenshire will continue his speech on 7 April when the Council next sits.

The Opposition Leader in the Upper House, the Hon David Ridgway has moved amendments to the Bill which will address the concerns held by the PSA. Further amendments are also expected.

A majority of Members of the Legislative Council do not support the Bill and it is clear that it will only pass through the Upper House in a significantly amended form.

Once again, thank you to members who have attended Parliamentary sittings and those who have offered to attend but not been able to because of the uncertainty of Parliamentary debate times.

The PSA will continue to campaign for its members !
