PUBLIC SECTOR BILL DEBATE RESUMES
Debate on the Public Sector Bill 2008 resumed in the Legislative Council last night. Important amendments aimed at protecting public sector workers have been tabled by the Hon David Ridgway (Liberal), the Hon Ann Bressington (Independent), the Hon Mark Parnell (Greens), the Hon Robert Brokenshire (Family First) and the Hon David Winderlich (Australian Democrats). It is clear that the Bill will only pass through the Legislative Council following proper consideration and substantial change. The amendments include changes to the provisions regarding the role of the Commissioner, Code of Conduct, the ability of Chief Executives to sack employees, appeals processes, protection regarding forced mobility and freedom of information/whistleblowers protections. Detailed Clause by Clause consideration of the Bill will now occur during the Committee stage of the debate, at which time each amendment will be considered. The Committee process will continue when Parliament resumes on Tuesday, 2 June. Last night only saw the commencement of the process, with no matters of substance dealt with.
