PSA WELCOMES INDUSTRIAL
COMMISSION PROPOSALS
The long running
public sector wages dispute took another turn today, with the
dispute going before the Industrial Relations Commission.
Public Service Association and Government negotiators appeared before Deputy President Peter Hampton in a Voluntary Conference in a hearing lasting several hours. PSA General Secretary Jan McMahon said before the Conference "that it was important to deal with the basic cause of the dispute, rather than focus on the bans, which were only symptoms." DP Hampton said in his statement "I am not inclined to make any recommendation at this stage directed towards industrial action more generally. "Equally, the present impasse as to the central issue in dispute requires some more direct intervention..." DP Hampton has recommended that some specific changes occur regarding Prison and Housing Trust bans where they impact potentially on health and safety. A further Commission Conference has been set for Friday, 27 February at 2.00pm. PSA welcomes the Commission's intervention to enable consideration of the key differences between Government and the PSA.
