A NEW CAR FOR $7000

On Tuesday, the House of Assembly passed legislation that would enable MP's to receive taxpayer subsidised cars for $7,000 a year.

It is expected that this legislation will be comfortably passed through the Legislative Council.

Earlier this year, a Private Member's Bill providing for MP's to have access to Government funded cars was passed by both Houses of Parliament after just two hours of debate.

This legislation required the independent Remuneration Tribunal to make a determination on providing MP's with motor vehicles. Due to a lack of compliance with the State's Constitution, the legislation was invalid.

However, because of this new plan being established as an administrative scheme rather than through legislation, it will not have to be subject to consideration by the Remuneration Tribunal.

Clearly, this latest benefit being provided to politicians creates yet another “double standard” within the South Australian community.

It is of concern that while PSA members have to struggle to achieve a fair salary outcome, Government is perfectly happy to introduce changes to Parliamentarians' conditions with no scrutiny by any Independent Tribunal.
