RESPONDS TO 'THE ADVERTISER'
The Advertiser editorial on Friday 26 May mentioned the PSA specifically in critical terms. PSA forwarded the following letter to the Advertiser in response. The PSA response was published in The Advertiser on Tuesday 30 May.
26 May 2006
Mr Melvin Mansell The Editor The Advertiser 31 Waymouth Street ADELAIDE SA 5000
Dear Editor,
I refer to your Editorial of 26 May 2006 in which you accuse the Public Service Association (PSA) of hypocrisy.
The PSA has always taken whatever action is necessary to protect the valuable role of the Public Sector. Prior to the last State election, the PSA ran a publicity campaign attacking a proposal by the Opposition to cut 4,000 Public Sector jobs.
The PSA is not hypocritical. When the Treasurer announced a review of Government Agencies budgets, the PSA determined to mount a campaign to once again promote the valuable and essential role of Public Sector workers.
A campaign was approved by the PSA Council in April 2006 and material and advertising has been under preparation now for some weeks for a campaign to start in June 2006.
Further and in relation to your editorial, I make the point that there is a world of difference between the present Government's voluntary separation package offered to 390 Public Servants and the involuntary cutting of 4000 Public Servants' jobs as was proposed by the Liberal Opposition pre-election. For you to compare one to the other lacks credibility.
The PSA has a proud record of defending the role of the Public Sector, and campaigning for its members, irrespective of which political party forms Government.
Yours sincerely,
JAN MCMAHON GENERAL SECRETARY
