UNSUNG HEROS RECEIVE MUCH DESERVED RECOGNITION

School Services Officers – the unsung heroes of the public education system – are being applauded and thanked for their efforts during a national week of recognition.

Organised by the Public Service Association, the National Recognition Week aims to raise the profile of this essential group of education workers.

There are more than 45,000 School Services Officers working around Australia.

They provide assessment, review and support to students and families in need. They also develop strategies with teachers to improve the lives of students, and manage school libraries, laboratories and kitchens as well as administering school budgets.

They are literally the backbone of our school system,” PSA General Secretary Jan McMahon said during the launch of the National Recognition Week.

Without them students, staff and parents would suffer. Their work, usually performed in the background, often with fewer resources than needed, is essential to the healthy social, physical and educational development of our next generation.”

In South Australia, the National Recognition Week will be celebrated with a display of the work of School Services Officers in the foyer of the Education Department building – 31 Flinders Street, Adelaide

A Poster competition for children highlighting the work of School Services Officers forms part of this display.

Additionally, individual schools will hold events to thank their unsung heroes.

The PSA will host a conference for more than 75 School Services Officers on Tuesday, 22 August 2006 at 122 Pirie Street, Adelaide.
