PSA SECURES EXTRA RESOURCES FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC ADVOCATE

Earlier this year, the Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) was provided with additional resources that would assist with workloads. These resources were provided following the commencement of industrial action within the OPA.

In addition to the provision of extra resources, a commitment was also given to conduct a comprehensive and thorough review of the staffing levels and workloads within the OPA. This review was completed in late March 2006.

The PSA understands that various recommendations were contained in the report, including the provision of 7 new staff. To date, the PSA has not been successful in accessing a copy of the report.

The Agency however, has confirmed it sought additional funding through the 2006/07 budget process, but was not successful.

It is apparent that a number of workload issues remain unresolved within the OPA. However, it is pleasing to note that the Agency has recognised that further funding is required to ensure OPA staff have a reasonable workload.

Two additional guardian positions have this week been approved on a temporary basis until June 2007.

Whilst the PSA welcomes these extra positions, it is essential that ongoing and sustainable measures are put in place to ensure OPA staff are not exposed continually to unreasonable workloads.

The PSA is committed to the welfare of its members and will continue to advocate on behalf of OPA members.
