HOSPITAL CHANGES - IMPACT ON TQEH AND HEALTH MEMBERS

Dr Tony Sherbon, CEO Department of Health and Professor Kaye Challinger, Executive Director of Acute Services/Acting CEO Central Northern Adelaide Health Service met with Minister John Hill on Wednesday 6 June 2007. Dr Sherbon and Ms Challinger held a meeting with TQEH staff at 3:30pm today to deliver the Government's decision, which devastated staff. This is part of the Government's new Health Plan which will be announced in the Budget on Thursday 7 June 2007.

Due to an aging population and demand for changes in the health sector there will be a new 5-step model of care. The Lyell McEwin Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, and the Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital (which is to replace the existing Royal Adelaide Hospital and is due for completion in 2016), will be the three main hospitals in the Adelaide metropolitan area.

The main initial impact for TQEH will be on the Renal Transplant Unit, which will move to the RAH over the next few months. The Government considered it untenable for the unit to remain in its current form. As from next week the Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit will amalgamate.

The PSA also understands that pathology service providers at TQEH will be impacted on, but no details were given.

The PSA will seek further information on the impact to members and will represent members fully with their concerns. The Government Health Plan is available on the Department of Health website, www.health.sa.gov.au
