PSA WINS MEAL ALLOWANCES

As a result of PSA action, the Department for Families and Communities have applied the correct interpretation as to what members are entitled to when they are absent overnight within South Australia on Departmental business.

Under the relevant award (the South Australian Public Sector Employees Interim Award) the provision is clear. Payment of a meal allowance is either for being absent overnight (the higher rate: breakfast $14.70, lunch, $14.70, dinner $30.25) or being absent during the day ie. not overnight (the lower rate: breakfast $12.70, lunch n/a, dinner $18.15), subject to times of departure.

The Department's previous interpretation allowed in some circumstances payment to be made at the lower rate when the higher rate applied. This has now been rectified, thanks to action by the PSA.
