SUPERVISING YOUNG PEOPLE
Public Service Association (PSA) representatives met with Families SA Transitional Accommodation (TA) Management to discuss issues raised by members in relation to the Supervising Young People document. Members raised concerns about the intention of such a document. It was felt that inflammatory or intimidating statements relating to liability and negligence were not needed. The document was also not clear in regards to determining appropriate levels of supervision of young people in care. Management welcomed the comments made by members and indicated that discussion and debate was healthy, no matter what the topic. PSA questioned the rationale for distributing this document to members. Management stated that the document was simply a "restating and clarification" of the Youth Worker role in TA. Management acknowledged the day to day complexities each member encounters and sought to reassure members that "erring on the side of caution" would not be criticised or disciplined. Members who feel they are being dealt with unfairly for "erring on the side of caution" should contact Worksite Representative or Industrial Officer. In regards to the levels of supervision required for young people in care, Management stated that each young person had different requirements and this was ultimately determined by Management. Feedback from Youth Workers was and is welcomed. Complying with these recommendations is important, if only to give members protection when things do not go to plan. If a member has followed procedure then the responsibility does not rest on his/her shoulders. Recent history proves that the number of Critical Incidents and Special Investigations have decreased and this is a testament to members' work ethic and dedication to the job. Management agreed to meet with members should there be further concerns in relation to this document. The PSA wil also be present at such a meeting. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact your Worksite Representatives or PSA Industrial Officer Jean-Guy Townsend 8205 3203, jgt@cpsu.asn.au PSA WORKING FOR MEMBERS 29 April 2008 |
