UPPER HOUSE DEBATE STARTS ON PUBLIC SECTOR BILL

Debate on the Public Sector Bill commenced in the Legislative Council at approximately 9.30pm last night.

The Opposition's Leader in the Legislative Council, The Hon David Ridgway spoke to the Opposition's amendments including proposals to deal with concerns such as Chief Executives having the power to sack employees, code of conduct, and the role of the Commissioner of Public Employment. The Opposition amendments are in line with PSA proposals.

Greens MLC, The Hon Mr Mark Parnell as well as the Australian Democrats' The Hon Mr David Winderlich supported keys issues raised by the Opposition.

The PSA understands that Family First's Robert Brokenshire and No Pokies/Independent Ann Bressington will be speaking on Thursday when the debate is scheduled to continue. Following extensive discussions with both these Members of the Legislative Council, it is expected that they will provide support for the Opposition amendments.

The actions of the Opposition and non Government Parties and Independents has yet again proved the vital role the Legislative Council plays as an independent House of Review.

The fact that the PSA is not affiliated with any political party has enabled genuine, full and frank discussions with all parties as it seeks to deal with the many concerns the PSA has with this Bill.

The PSA thanks members who have provided valuable information and who have attended Parliamentary sittings.

The PSA will continue to campaign for its members !
