PSA RALLY AGAINST MURRAY BRIDGE PRISON PROPOSAL

TUES 7th APRIL 2009 1:30pm PARLIAMENT HOUSE

(Buses have been arranged to pick up members at Yatala and Adelaide Womens Prison at 12.45pm)

The Public Service Association (PSA) is holding a rally to protest against the proposal to move 400 Correctional Service jobs to regional Murray Bridge.

The PSA has called on the Government of South Australia and the Department for Correctional Services to reconsider its decision to relocate Yatala Labour Prison and the Adelaide Women's Prison to Murray Bridge. Independent University research highlights the expected negative impact on the Murray Bridge community, and PSA has called for a community impact study to be undertaken.

The proposed relocation will adversely affect over 400 Correctional Services Officers and centralise, at significant expense to the public, Correctional Services at Murray Bridge.

The PSA urges the Government to reconsider its decision and not waste tax payer dollars on this poorly conceived proposal and force Correctional Services Officers to relocate or travel daily from Adelaide to Murray Bridge.

The answer to prison overcrowding and future needs is to expand all existing prisons,or build on current sites, not to close down Adelaide institutions and make Murray Bridge the prison capital of Australia.
