Debate
on the Public Sector Bill finally started again in the Legislative
Council at 11.00pm last
night.
MLCs
Robert Brokenshire (Family First) and Anne Bressington (Independent)
spoke and advised that they would support the Opposition amendments
(as supported by PSA), as well as moving further amendments of their
own.
MLC
Rob Lucas (Lib) is due to speak on Wednesday afternoon (time to be
confirmed, but no
earlier than 2.30pm).
Some
key elements of the two speeches follow.
Robert
Brokenshire MLC
"If
Bill is passed thousands will suffer."
"This
Bill is similar to WorkCover. It doesn't look at the real issues.
It's about kick the worker."
"Enhanced
role for Chief Executives is really just for them to hire and
fire."
"Mobility
can mean forced relocation."
"Chief
Executives will be able to be more draconian in reduction of
workforce numbers."
Anne
Bressington MLC
"Whistleblowers
lives are made a misery for doing no more than trying to
improve the
situation."
"Recognise
that public sector has many dedicated and committed people. Dispose
of 'deadwood' through due process."
"Need
level of protection and safety net for those employees just trying
to do their job better."
"The
Bill takes away the role of the Commissioner."
Unlike
the House of Assembly where the Government controls the numbers in
any vote, the Legislative
Council is made up of many Parties and Independents, making it a
genuine House of Review. No wonder the Premier wants
to get rid of it.
