UPPER HOUSE AMENDS PUBLIC SECTOR BILL

The Legislative Council last night commenced debate on the Public Sector Bill.

Debate, while lengthy, has so far only dealt with the first 20 Clauses.

Significant positive amendments have been passed to Clauses dealing with Code of Conduct, Whistleblowers protection and the Role of the Commissioner for Public Employment.

The amendments have been moved and/or supported by the Opposition, Greens, Family First, Democrats and Independent MLC Ann Bressington.

All amendments demonstrate the Legislative Council's role as a "House of Review", and improve the Bill while better protecting employees and the community.

The debate adjourned at 11.30pm, with significant amendments still to be considered.

Debate is likely to resume Wednesday evening when Clauses dealing with Chief Executives power to sack employees and Appeal provisions are expected to be dealt with.
