$33.3 MILLION COMMONWEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING!

The Public Service Association(PSA) met with the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology(DFEEST) Deputy CE on 26th June 2009, and is pleased to report that DFEEST has been successful in bidding for a significant amount of Commonwealth Infrastructure funding. The $33.3 million is well above the South Australian population percentage normally allocated to States. This funding exceeds expectations.
The following TAFE SA campuses were fortunate in securing this funding.

Whyalla $6.25 Million

To be used for a major campus upgrade of facilities including installing a lift to ensure the campus meets disability access guidelines and walkways to provide cover from the elements for students and workers.

Mt Gambier $4 Million

To build two new Workshops for Heavy Vehicles and Building, Construction and Furnishing. This will involve moving these courses from Naracorte to Mt Gambier.

Mt Barker and Mt Gambier $0.7 Million

To install energy efficient products to reduce the environmental footprint of each campus.

General Equipment Upgrade $1.68 Million

As the name suggests, this funding will be spent on equipment upgrades. These upgrades will include installing contemporary machine guarding and a mixture of new equipment and upgrading of existing equipment.

Noarlunga $8.7 Million

This significant funding will be spent on expanding the Nursing and Community Services and Business Services Educational Programs. These programs, especially Nursing and Community course, run at capacity. So, with the expansion of these programs it is likely that a positive impact on jobs will be achieved.

Adelaide $4 Million

This funding will be for the refurbishment of the Hospitality unit and to transfer the Fashion and Footwear unit from Marleston campus to Adelaide. As a condition of this Commonwealth funding, the current transfer of Adelaide Hospitality staff will be brought forward by 6 months. This is a condition of the funding arrangement with the Federal Government.

Regency $5 Million

A new kitchen will be built to expand courses for students. Again, due to the popularity of these courses it is expected that jobs can be created by the increase in demand and capacity to fill courses.

Tea Tree Gully $3 Million

This funding will potentially have the biggest impact on members. The funding will be used to relocate the printing and technology unit from Croyden campus and install it at Tea Tree Gully. Tea Tree Gully, currently, does not have an abundance of free space and it is possible that a unit may be relocated from Tea Tree Gully campus to another. More information will be forthcoming once it is available.

The potential for members to be relocated is possible, and therefore this can also be quite an anxious time for members. The PSA will be consulted and appropriate HR Principles used for any organisational change.

Infrastructure Master Plan

This report has been prepared to assess TAFE SA campuses, including any advice or evidence which may include closing or implementing major change to some campuses. The report is currently with the Minister and is yet to be submitted to Cabinet. It is expected that this report will be made public shortly.
