TRAFFIC CAMERA UNIT LIAISON MEETING

The PSA attended a recent liaison meeting with the manager of Traffic Camera Unit (TCU). The PSA was represented by PSA Industrial Officer, Ted Szarek and PSA Worksite Representative, Michael White.

The following items were raised/discussed:

  • All camera vehicles have now been fitted with security film on the windows.

  • The use of camera signs has ceased.

  • A Standard Operating Procedure for Tripod operations has been redrafted allowing for assistance if requested.

  • There has been some feedback from the public regarding not knowing they have infringed until they receive the infringement notice in the mail (as a result of abolishing use of the camera signs).

  • Manager TCU is planning some formal training for TCU staff on tactical options to deal with difficult (conflict) situations.

  • The development of a “public information handout” for use by camera operators was also discussed. This handout could be provided to a member of the public who wishes to raise any matter relating to camera operations with SAPOL. The handout would include contact details for manager TCU.

The next liaison meeting is scheduled for Thursday 3rd December 2009.

The aim of the liaison meetings is to provide a forum for PSA representatives to meet with management to discuss/resolve issues and raise items of interest to members at TCU. The forum may raise issues regarding OHS&W, conditions of employment and operational issues which may be affecting members. The forum is not intended to deal with individual issues or grievances as these would be handled on a confidential and individual basis.
