MEDICAL CERTIFICATES AND SICK LEAVE

The Public Service Association (PSA) met with DFC representatives to discuss the latest written directive to members at Magill Training Centre to supply a medical certificate for ANY absence from work.

The PSA reminded the department of their responsibility to address absenteeism on an individual basis and to appropriately counsel any member they believe is abusing the system, prior to issuing the member(s) in question with written direction.

DFC admitted that the process they undertook was incorrect but would stand by their decision.

DFC SAYS "WE WERE WRONG BUT WE'LL STAND BY OUR DECISION"

DFC also agreed, that in particular cases, it would be appropriate for members to approach their supervisor or the Centre Manager to provide mitigating evidence as to why they should not be required to provide a medical certificate. Whilst the PSA agrees that members should be offered this opportunity, it in no way excuses the department for acting in such a capricious and unfair manner.

The PSA will support any member who wishes to take this matter up in the Appeals Tribunal. Members should contact their Industrial Officer should they wish to lodge an appeal.
