SELECT COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES SA REPORT
The final report of the Select Committee on Families SA has now been tabled in Parliament. The Committee was appointed by the Legislative Council on 14 March 2007 to examine and report on Families SA. From the report it is obvious that the system is overwhelmed, under siege and in crisis. The PSA made a submission to the Committee and a PSA delegation appeared before it. The PSA welcomes the report which has highlighted that 'the system is overwhelmed, under siege and in crisis'. It is now time for the Government to genuinely deal with the many concerns that the PSA has identified. It is time for the Government to stop holding enquiries and to start properly resourcing Families SA. The PSA has been particularly scathing of the recent Government budget decisions to cut administrative staff. The report of the Select Committee recommends that 'administrative staff be appointed to regional offices, as a matter of urgency, to ease the burden on Case Workers.' The report makes it clear that a comprehensive overhaul of the internal structure and management of Families SA is required. PSA
