MAINTAIN SERVICES, NOT CUTS!
The
decision by the Government 12 months ago to establish a Sustainable
Budget Commission is now increasingly seen as unnecessary due to
changed circumstances. The need to cut $750m to "balance the books" no
longer exists.
Australia has got through the Global Financial Crisis particularly
well, in no small part through expenditure by the Commonwealth
Government as it invested for the future.
Now is the time for the South Australian Government to invest in jobs,
services and infrastructure. It is able to do so as a result of a
dramatically improved financial situation.
University of Adelaide's Professor John Spoehr has stated that "the
outcome for this financial year alone is expected to be $450m better
than expected." He went on to say that "There is no threat that the
State Government will lose its AAA credit rating in the current
context."
Further public comment was provided in the Sunday Mail of 6 June.
