PUBLIC SECTOR CUTS NOT NEEDED

The State Government, through the Sustainable Budget Commission (SBC), can no longer justify slashing $750 million from the public sector.

The Federal budget provided the South Australian Government with a GST windfall of in excess of $740 million – more than enough to cover the budget deficit that was expected 12 months ago.

The economic situation has dramatically changed and Treasury needs to recognise this.

The PSA, however, continues to receive feedback of potentially massive job cuts throughout the whole public sector.

Job cuts will equal service cuts.

South Australian families are entitled to an adequately resourced public sector to enable the provision of vital services to those most in need. Cuts to the public sector are not necessary and certainly not required.

Members will be interested to know that last week the Tasmanian Government, in its budget, did not cut public sector jobs, but rather focused on creating employment.

The public sector has continually borne the brunt of cut backs whenever the Government of the day has faced financial concerns. This 'Treasury' position should not be allowed to go unchallenged to the detriment of South Australian families and the community.

The PSA calls upon the South Australian Government to ensure that South Australians are provided with the services they deserve!

Information about the community impact of cuts should continue to be provided to the PSA.
