DO IT FOR LIFE PROGRAM - DISPUTE UPDATE 3

On Wednesday 21 July 2010, the PSA met with with SA Health in relation to the dispute lodged by the PSA on 30 June 2010 regarding the Agency's failure to consult regarding the slashing of jobs within the Do it for Life Lifestyle Risk Factor Modification Program (DIFL).

The DIFL Program aims to reduce risk factors for adults at high risk of developing preventable chronic diseases.

As advised previously, funding cuts were announced on 30 June 2010, resulting in over 50% positions to be axed, despite the obvious benefits that such a program provides to the South Australian community and the Health system in general.

At Wednesday's meeting, PSA expressed grave concerns regarding the Department of Health's lack of genuine consultation in this matter.

Clause 25.1 of the current relevant Enterprise Agreement states:

"Consultation involves the sharing of information and the exchange of views between employers and persons or bodies that must be consulted and the genuine opportunity for them to contribute effectively to any decision making process."

Clearly this does not happen. "Discussions" at a SA Health senior Management level does not suffice.  PSA reiterated to SA Health representatives of the requirement to consult genuinely.

Consultation is a right, not a privilege.  DIFL employees are entitled to be consulted to contribute effectively to the decision making process, rather than simply be advised of what has occurred.

The PSA looks forward to SA Health's response on how they are going to address the concerns raised.
