ENSURING QUALITY USE OF MEDICINES IN COUNTRY HEALTH SA

In early March 2010 the Public Service Association (PSA) was briefed on Country Health SA (CHSA) undertaking a project to:

  • Evaluate the nature and extent of pharmacy service delivery to SA country hospitals

  • Identify barriers to increasing quality use of medicines in country SA hospitals

  • Make recommendations to improve pharmacy service delivery, with a particular emphasis on the quality use of medicines component of the Pharmaceutical Reform

  • Evaluate the potential to introduce PBS to relevant country hospitals.

The PSA has now received the draft Ensuring Quality Use of Medicines in CHSA Recommendation Report that has been developed. This draft report is now out for consultation and CHSA are seeking PSA members feedback to ensure key priority areas for future action have been identified, and that the recommendations reflect the needs of Pharmacy Stakeholders in CHSA. The PSA understands that although the recommendations have in principle support from the CHSA Executive, further work is required to identify funding to enable their full implementation.
