JOB CUTS & SERVICE REDUCTION

PSA Worksite Representatives met yesterday to discuss the State Government's upcoming State Budget and concerns regarding the outcome of the Sustainable Budget Commission (SBC).

Over recent times there has been speculation regarding job cuts and the commencement of separation packages, which by all reports are to be announced on Budget day on Thursday, 16 September 2010.

Recently the PSA launched its 'www.doesntaddup.com.au' campaign which included independent research by Professor John Spoehr from the University of Adelaide regarding the good condition of South Australia's economy.  It is abundantly clear that job cuts will result in service cuts, with a detrimental impact on South Australian families.

As members are aware, the Premier of South Australia, prior to the March 2010 State election provided an undertaking to the PSA that there would be no forced redundancies in the public sector.  The Advertiser has reported that the Government may be considering an 'open call' for Voluntary Separation Packages.

It is the PSA's view that there is no need for any job cuts and that they should not occur.  If, however, the Government is to announce separation packages over the coming weeks, they must be voluntary and must be managed and controlled to minimise the impact on service delivery, loss of expertise and workloads.  To allow anyone who applies to leave will have a disastrous effect upon SA families and the community with the loss of experience and corporate knowledge.

The PSA is continuing its campaign to oppose any cuts.  Should you have any examples of service cuts and their impact on the community or your workplace please go to:
