SA GOVERNMENT URGED TO BALLOT PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS

At the State Library today an alliance of Unions and the Employee Ombudsman joined with members in urging the State Government to take its wages offer to a ballot of all Public Sector workers as a way of resolving a long running pay dispute.

The alliance included the Public Service Association, the United Trades and Labor Council, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia. The Employee Ombudsman represents non-union Public Sector workers.

Members have demanded an opportunity to have a vote on their wages offer. Clearly, Minister Wright's decision to seek an application for a new Award in the South Australian Industrial Relations Commission denies Public Servants their very right to a vote on future wages and conditions.

Members are adamant that a democratic process must occur. The PSA has stated that it would abide by the outcome of a ballot. However, should the workforce reject the pay offer, it is expected that Government negotiators return to the table in good faith and genuinely negotiate a reasonable outcome.

The alliance of Unions has written to the Minister seeking an urgent meeting to further discuss their concerns.
