Flash![]() WHAT ABOUT
US, MINISTER?
In breaking news, the State
Government has offered a 16.5% pay increase over 3 years to Nurses.
(Average 5.5% per annum).
Such an offer clearly demonstrates that the Government's offer to PSA of 3.5% to 4.0% per annum is unreasonable. Whilst the PSA welcomes the Nurses outcome, it is disappointing that the Minister for Industrial Relations does not display the same support to other public sector workers. The Minister's attack on PSA in the media today is extraordinary. PSA, as always, will actively represent members' interests and calls upon the Government to genuinely negotiate an EB outcome which recognises the value of work undertaken by all public sector workers. Does the Minister genuinely believe that Social Workers, Prison Officers, Dentists, Medical Scientists, Engineers, National Park Rangers and Housing Managers are not as deserving of a pay increase as Nurses? On Thursday 27 May 2004, the PSA and the Government appeared before Deputy President Hampton of the South Australian Industrial Relations Commission to hear an application by Government for arbitration. PSA opposed such an application and put forward the view that the current offer should be put to ballot and that all efforts should be focused on the Government being required to genuinely negotiate. The Industrial Relations Commission has not yet handed down a decision on the Government's application. Once
a decision has been received, an urgent meeting of Worksite
Representatives will be called to examine the outcome. 4
