"FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S IR DREAM NOW A LIVING NIGHTMARE FOR WORKING
FAMILIES"
Yesterday,
the final passage of the Federal Government's Workchoices Bill passed
through the Federal Parliament. These radical changes that
will
be detrimental to all working families in differing ways have now
become law.
Whilst
the Legislation is cumbersome, the most fundamental principle is the
general move away from collective
agreements which are underpinned by Awards. Past
“across the
board" improvements in such areas as leave, flexi
time, penalty rates, paid maternity leave, salary
improvements, salary
sacrifice, voluntary
flexible working arrangements, shift allowances,
meal and vehicle allowances
are at risk,
with the greater emphasis on individual contracts.
Whilst
the immediate wages and conditions of PSM Act members are not immediately affected by the
new
Legislation, members in "Corporations" (including health
members) will be transferred over to the Federal jurisdiction.
Union
membership will be more important than ever. In a system geared
towards individual contracts, it will only be through the experience
and resources of unions such as PSA/CPSU that members can be
protected.
PSA/CPSU
will continue to represent members through its capacity to provide
advice, represent and negotiate and use of research, academic and
legal assistance as necessary.
As
advised previously, this Act is large and complex. The PSA
is committed to keeping its membership informed
of developments. Updates will be provided regularly.
