PARLIAMENT HOUSE PROTEST A SUCCESS

Photos of today's rally may be viewed here.

Today thousands of angry PSA members rallied on the steps of Parliament House protesting the Government's move to rush through debate on its Budget legislation in the House of Assembly.

The protest was only arranged at short notice following the Government's announcement yesterday afternoon to schedule the Budget debate for today. The rally was supported by SA Unions, other Unions, and members of the community.

The Budget legislation will change accrual for Long Service Leave and abolish Recreation Leave Loading. The Government has also refused to recommit to its 'no forced redundancy' guarantee.

Other Budget announcements include the slashing of almost 4,000 public sector jobs. This will affect every South Australian family and is not acceptable.

Members vowed to continue the campaign and unanimously passed the following motion;

This meeting;

Condemns the Rann Government, and Treasurer Foley, for the cruel 2010 Budget,

Deplores the attack on jobs and services,

Expresses outrage at the use of the Budget to reduce and remove working conditions protected by Awards and Enterprise Agreements, and

Determines to fight this Budget by all available means.

The PSA will oppose Budget cuts, and is working with members and the community to protect jobs, employment conditions and the services so necessary to South Australian families.

A further rally involving all unions is set for Friday 8 October at 12:30pm at the State Administration Centre, Victoria Square.

ACTU media release supporting the PSA is here.
